1. What is Import Export Code (IEC)?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. It is mandatory for any business or individual engaged in importing or exporting goods and services from India.

IEC acts as a license for businesses to enter the global market and is essential for customs clearance, bank transactions related to foreign trade, and availing export incentives.


2. Who Needs IEC Registration?

IEC is mandatory for:

  • Businesses or individuals importing goods into India

  • Entities or persons exporting goods or services outside India

  • Businesses applying for benefits or subsidies under DGFT or export promotion councils

Note: For service exports, IEC is required only when the service provider receives foreign currency and wants to avail of government benefits.
