MSME (Udyam) Registration: A Complete Guide for Indian Enterprises


1. Introduction to MSME Registration

MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) play a crucial role in India’s economic growth by contributing significantly to employment, manufacturing, and exports. To support and promote these enterprises, the Government of India has implemented MSME Registration, now known as Udyam Registration, offering various benefits like financial aid, subsidies, protection, and ease of doing business.

2. MSME Classification (Based on Investment & Turnover)

As per the latest notification dated 1st July 2020, classification of MSMEs is as follows:

Micro Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore
Small Up to ₹ 25 crore Up to ₹100 crore
Medium Up to ₹ 125 crore Up to ₹500 crore

Note: Both manufacturing and service sectors follow the same criteria.

4. Who Can Register as MSME?

The following entities can register as MSMEs:

  • Proprietorships

  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUF)

  • Private Limited Companies

  • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLP)

  • Co-operative Societies

  • Any other undertaking fulfilling the investment & turnover limits


5. Documents Required for MSME Registration (Udyam)

Registration is paperless and based on self-declaration. The following are required:

  • Aadhaar number of the business owner/proprietor/partner/director

  • PAN of the business (mandatory for all enterprises)

  • Business address and activity details

  • Bank account details

  • NIC Code (National Industry Classification)

  • Investment and turnover details (auto-fetched from ITR and GST data)

No physical documents need to be uploaded.


6. How to Register for MSME (Udyam) Online

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Visit the Official Portal:
    Go to https://udyamregistration.gov.in

  2. Click “For New Entrepreneurs”
    Select whether you have Aadhaar for Proprietor, or register as Company/LLP with PAN

  3. Enter Aadhaar & Validate
    OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number

  4. PAN Validation & Business Details
    System will automatically fetch PAN and ITR/GST details

  5. Fill in Additional Information

    • Business name and activity

    • Address and contact details

    • NIC Code

    • Number of employees

    • Investment and turnover estimates

  6. Submit Application
    Declaration and final submission

  7. Receive Udyam Certificate
    An E-Certificate with a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) will be issued


7. Timeframe & Validity

  • Instant registration after OTP and PAN validation

  • Udyam registration does not expire – valid for a lifetime unless cancelled

After registration:

  • Update details annually based on ITR & GST returns

  • Use Udyam certificate to apply for MSME benefits in banks, tenders, and schemes

  • Link Udyam with GeM portal, TReDS, NSIC, and other government platforms
